Cannot use 'left join' in SQL as basis for new data source in Pentaho 5.3

Using Pentaho 5.3 against an underlying MySQL database. When I try to create a new Data source and select the 'SQL query' as the source type... I've noticed that I can't use 'left join' statements in the query. Any reason?
