xaction: read and display session variable (or default value)

Hi,
Using pentaho user console, pentaho 5.4, enterprise edition.

I am attempting to use an xaction (set-session-id.xaction, attached) to set a session variable based on the current logged in user console user.
The security input principalName is used to retreive the username of logged in user.
This is used in an using an SQLLookupRule action-definition to read a corresponding id from a database.
The id is output as a session variable.

The set-session-id.xaction when run from within the user console, displays the expected result on screen.
I want to check that this id value is actually stored in the session.

To do this I thought of using another xaction eg. test.xaction to take the session variable as an input and output it to screen.
If the session is blank or not set, a default value will be returned.

So...
Can anyone give me a template xaction to read and output a session variable to use a basis for my test.xaction?
Its the action definition im having trouble with. I guess a javascript rule would be best for this?

Sorry for the noob question, documentation has been enough to get me started but im struggling to make progress...

Thanks
Jason
